7 Small Habits That Changed Me

Stop and think about every little habit you have. More or less, it’s either making you or breaking you and will cause big ripples in your future. That makes habits an integral part of our lives to look after.

Unfortunately, I realised that that the hard way later. But when I did, I quickly jotted the bad habits I made so obliviously and the good ones I needed to make right away. The good habits I made are all micro-habits. Micro-habits are essentially small habits that create a big change. That’s what is so beautiful about them. They’re the smallest behaviours/ habits but create great changes in future.

Take a look at my list of small habits that changed me and might help you, too.

1. Making my bed first thing in the morning

The one minute that goes in making my bed is all I need to shrug off the morning lethargy. It also gives me a sense of accomplishment because I treat it like the first task of the day that I have to do. Plus, I’ll have to make my bed some time everyday or the other so no point avoiding.

2. Hydrating more often

We all know why we should hydrate ourselves regularly but sometimes we’re so caught up in our work or devices that we are unaware of our thirst or when we last drank water. This is one habit you should make if your water intake is poor. It’s is most basic thing you can do for yourself. In my experience, I had to set hourly reminders and keep a bottle by my side before it became a habit.

3. Moving often

Excessive hours of sedentary posture has been associated with several diseases that you’d rather never have so I made it a habit to get up at least every hour if I’m sitting and take a walk around before returning back to business again. It’s also serves as a short break and helps me think clearly.

4. Gratitude log

Expressing gratitude has shown to boost mental health, self-esteem, positivity and reduce stress so at the end of the day, I sit down and write at least 2-3 things I am grateful for and I cannot emphasise on how great it makes me feel. Do try it.

5. Memory of the day

You can call me an archivist; I love keeping track of good memories and looking back at them. After my gratitude log, I write down one thing that was worth remembering that day. This also another way to stay positive and be happier. See? Happiness can even be found in the smallest of things.

6. Learning something new everyday

Learning something new, for me, doesn’t always have to be a new skill or in a classroom. It could be an article I read, a video I watched or even a podcast I listened to. Anything really. Even learning a new word. The point is to never stop learning.

Tip: listen to a TED Talk while getting ready, commuting or at any time of your choice but do it everyday.

7. Resetting (workplace) back to neutral

My workplace is my study desk (I’m a student). I make sure to reset it to neutral every evening i.e. cleaning and putting things back where they were. You might think it’s because I want to keep my room clean. Yeah that too, but it’s mainly because resetting it creates this mental state of ‘I’m done for today’ and helps me come out of work-mode so that I can have evenings for myself. It’s like a mental boundary separating ‘serious study mode’ and ‘relax and chill’.

These were the small habits I recently made that turned out to be a game-changer. What were some small habits that that changed the way things worked for you? Let me know!:)

Love this list – I make my bed every morning. It sets in motion a while other host of habits that now form my morning routine. Hydrate more is a good one – perhaps very under appreciated by many. I should put more water pitches about my home. Thanks for inspiring me. All the best, AP2 🙏
