Morning Pages: to Induce Creativity and Ease the Mind

It’s not an exercise or workout. Neither is it meditation. It doesn’t need skill and practise. All it needs is 15 minutes every morning.

Only few days ago, I came across this wonderful idea originally introduced by Julia Cameron in her best selling book ‘The Artists’s Way’. It is Morning Pages.

As the name suggests (or maybe not), Morning Pages is essentially writing at least 3 pages longhand every morning before you get on with your work. Notice that you are required to write, not type, since writing is a more intuitive and personalised way of expression. Don’t worry, it does not require you to be great at writing or have an exceptional way with words. You only need to write anything that comes to your mind or is on your mind. Maybe how you plan to go about the day, or how you over-cooked last night’s dinner, or how you were too tired to do the laundry yesterday. Anything, really. Note that this is not the same as journaling.

In my experience, writing Morning Pages has greatly helped me focus on my work. It gets my mind working before I start with my work. I feel like I have more headspace for other things after I finish writing, as a result, improving the quality of my work. I have also noticed that I come up with most of my ideas and thoughts while I’m writing Morning Pages. Initially when I decided to try it, I thought three pages would be a lot, so I started with one page every day for a week. Then I took it further to two, and now finally I write three pages. That’s how it went for me.

I would strongly suggest that you try Morning Pages. Do let me know about your experience if you’ve tried it.
